Affordable storage: how to find a cheap storage unit
Affordable storage is less about finding the lowest advertised price and more about avoiding the common ways people overpay: renting too much space, paying for features they do not need, and missing fees and rent increases. Here is what a fair price looks like and how to get one.
A fair price for a 10x10
$75 – $120per month, with deals to national average
The national average for a 10x10 is about $120 a month. Renters using online deals paid about $75 to $80 in 2026, and in the cheapest big cities the average is $98. Smaller units cost much less: about $35 to $52 for a 5x5.

- Portable containers for short moves; see Storage unit vs. PODS: which is cheaper?.
Fees to add to the monthly rent
Rent is not the only cost. Most facilities add a one-time admin fee (Extra Space Storage, for example, charges $50), require insurance or a protection plan of about $10 to $30 a month, and expect you to bring or buy a disc lock for $10 to $20. Some ask for a deposit, often one month's rent. After move-in specials end, rents commonly rise 5% to 10% every 6 to 18 months.
Ask for the full move-in total, not just the monthly rate. See Storage unit fees and insurance and How much does it cost to rent a storage unit?.
Budget the total, not just the rent
Admin fees, insurance and rent increases can add $65 to $100 or more to your first month and more over time. Our How much does it cost to rent a storage unit? guide shows the full math by size.
