Budget self storage options
If you need storage on a tight budget, the type of space you choose matters as much as the facility. A small standard unit starts around $35 a month, while the same items in a larger climate-controlled unit could cost three times as much. Here are the budget options and when each makes sense.
Small budget units
$35 – $75per month, 5x5 to 5x10
National average street rates are about $52 for a 5x5 and $74 for a 5x10. With online deals, small units rent for as little as $35; in pricier markets a 5x10 can reach $150.

How to choose the cheapest option for your situation
- Storing for under three months during a move? A portable container can save a truck rental and a second move. Compare in Storage unit vs. PODS: which is cheaper?.
- Storing for a year or more? A standard unit is almost always cheaper per month.
- Only furniture and boxes? Non-climate units are fine in most climates.
- Storing a vehicle? Outdoor parking costs far less than an enclosed unit.
Fees to add to the monthly rent
Rent is not the only cost. Most facilities add a one-time admin fee (Extra Space Storage, for example, charges $50), require insurance or a protection plan of about $10 to $30 a month, and expect you to bring or buy a disc lock for $10 to $20. Some ask for a deposit, often one month's rent. After move-in specials end, rents commonly rise 5% to 10% every 6 to 18 months.
Ask for the full move-in total, not just the monthly rate. See Storage unit fees and insurance and How much does it cost to rent a storage unit?.
Budget tips that make the biggest difference
- Declutter first: selling or donating items can drop you a whole size.
- Use uniform boxes and stack to the ceiling.
- Share a unit with a friend or family member.
- Ask for the lowest-price unit available, such as an upper-floor interior unit.
